Question about species modiems

I should have asked this before, but better late than never I suppose. So I'm debating between using one or two species modiems for the breeding application - According to the modiem page, combining two gives the effect of custom un/common species.

My question is, does the foal of the species have to make sense in terms of its parents' species? Specifically, could two sams have a sa'krien?

The species don't have to make sense in the slightest. I can't even count the number of normal parents who've produced Elementals lately. xD They can definitely have a Sa'krien!
