Pet Species Design Contest - results!

Pet Species Design Contest
Image
I’m very excited to announce the very first pet species design contest :D This is your chance to design a pet species!

This is a design contest, with a focus on the concept of the species rather than the written or visual description. Entries will be judged on their originality, how they appeal to me (since I’m going to be drawing lots!), and how well the species would fit into the already-exisiting Samanayr world :D

What are pets? Aren’t Samanayrs pets?!

These pets are actually Samanayr pets (and many Samanayrs would be very upset to hear themselves described as ‘pets’ - except Kodylas, of course). At the moment there are 7 major pet species and 7 minor pet species.

For more information on pets, please visit this page:

http://samanayrs.net/info/game-information/pets/

Prizes

There will be two winners, and each winning species will become an official new pet species! Each winner will receive a semi-custom breeding pair of their species and credit for the creation of their species on the pet info page.

In addition, each entrant will receive a random modem :D

Information

Some important information to keep in mind when designing your species!

- The Samanayr world is pretty fluid at the moment so it’s easy to fit things in. The world is a fantasy one with a mix of fantasy creatures and creatures you’d find on Earth. Magic has a greater focus than technology. If you have any other questions about the world please ask!
- The species can be a creature that might have evolved naturally (e.g. Wild Dragonets, Oquiesas) or a creature that was magically altered (e.g. Kreenasa Dragonets, Catgryphs).
- Samanayrs are only around 2 feet high, so the species should be around their size or smaller. Oquiesas and Rider mounts are the exception to this rule but you’ll also notice they’re quite rare XD
- They can have magical abilities, such as telepathy.

And some information about entering:

- There is a limit of one entry per person. Since this contest is running on PI and the Samanayr forums, please just submit your entry through one of those forums.
- You’re welcome to make small changes to your entry at any time (correcting typos, fixing image links, etc). Please do not make large changes once your entry has been posted (making an entirely different species, changing all of the image, etc). Make sure to check the event threads on both PI and the Sam forums:
http://ponyisland.net/index.php?src=for ... ic=3099742
http://samanayrs.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2840
- You’ll be responsible for making sure your idea isn’t similar to anyone else’s. If there are two very similar entries and I end up going with that idea, the person who submitted it first will win.
- Your entry can be written, drawn/visual, or a combination of the two!

Entering

To enter, please reply to this post with the following form filled out:

Species name:
Size:
Habitat:
Physical description:
Typical coloration:
(natural, unnatural, either, any colour/pattern restrictions?)
Abilities: (telepathy? easy to train? good at guarding stuff?)
Reproduction: (eggs, live young, cannot reproduce naturally)
Anything else? (optional)
If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair:

The contest will close January 28, 2pm PST/22:00 PI time - good luck!

Species name: Vair

Size: Vary, but no bigger than one foot long.

Habitat: Typically forested areas, but can also be found in grasslands. Mostly they need an environment that can support their diet, which is primarily bugs and small mammals and reptiles. A nest is usually made within a system of tree roots, but sometime vairs move into holes in a tree's trunk.

Physical description: Vairs look essentially like long, colorful weasels. As they age, vairs grow longer and elder vairs have almost serpentine bodies. This thin, flexible body is perfect for squeezing into small tunnels and with their sharp eyesight and curious nature, vairs prove to be excellent hunters as well as entertaining pets. Wild vairs tend to have up-turned, almost piggish snouts, which they use to dig up insects, but domesticated vairs can be bred without this feature. Their ear length can also be varied, ranging from small, rounded ears to long, pointed ones - though not as long as rabbit ears. Their eyes are small, round and dark, and some call them "beady." Vairs' small paws are clawed and are used for digging as well as scratching. Wild vairs have long tails that can be bushy, and domesticated vairs are often bred to enhance that trait.

Typical coloration: Vairs have beautiful coats that come in a variety of patterns and colors. Wild vairs' fur reflects their environment: browns ranging to golds, greys and silver, even shades of greens for those who live in the woods. These patterns also match their habitat; burrowing vairs can be found with mottled patterns that help them blend into roots and rocks, for example, or those that live in trees might be found with leaf-like patterns. Domestic vairs can be bred with much more variation in their colors and patterns: for example, greys that meld into blues, golds that redden into brilliant crimson. All vairs have creamy undersides.

Abilities: Vairs are less intelligent than dragonets, but can be trained to do simple tasks like retrieving small objects or doing basic tricks like rolling over, sitting, or playing dead. Because of their ability to squeeze through tight spots, they can also be trained to flush out vermin. More industrious owners can even train them to find treasure.

Reproduction: Vairs have live young in small litters. Wild vairs typically have one litter a year, based on the season and food availability, but domestic vairs can reproduce more frequently.

Anything else? These guys are based on Ramidreju and weasels in medieval folklore.

If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: Hmm... any colors are fine!

Just wanted to say that this is a great contest! I love seeing the world fleshed out more. And the encyclopedia is an awesome idea.

Species name: Zepp'r

Size: Generally around the size of a Samanayr head.

Habitat: Everywhere!

Physical description: Small, quasi-sentient clouds of vapor. They have eyes and a mouth, but no other static appendages.

Typical coloration: (natural, unnatural, either, any colour/pattern restrictions?) They come in any and all colors. The overall color tone and pattern tends to change based on mood, but will stay within one color family. For example, a Zepp'r that is blue when calm might take on reddish hues when angered, or darken to navy when sad. Patterns are not generally clearly defined, as they take some concentration to maintain. However, some of the larger or smarter ones may be able to maintain a pattern quite easily. So really, anything is possible!

Abilities: (telepathy? easy to train? good at guarding stuff?) They have very limited speech, mostly communicating through expression and motion. They can change their outward form and appearance, but cannot interact with any physical object. So they could change shape to have arms and legs, but they would not be able to pick anything up. They seem to feed on emotion, reflecting the mood and temper of their Samanayr partner.

Reproduction: (eggs, live young, cannot reproduce naturally) Effort has been made to study the reproduction method of the Zepp'r, but so far without success. Family groupings have been observed, so multiplication of the species is possible, but nobody has been able to catch them at it to see how it's done!

Anything else? (optional) These are based loosely on Morph from the Disney movie Treasure Planet.

If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: No preference really :)

Species name: Wynsent

Size: 8-16 inches

Habitat: Wynsent are pretty adaptable; dwelling equally well in rocky cliffs or forests. They don't like open grasslands or exposed tundra.

Physical description: like a cross between a gerbil and a flying squirrel. Scampering rodent with a long tail tufted on the tip. A flap of skin connects the side of their body to front and rear legs. Small claws, rounded ears and black eyes.

Typical coloration: Browns, tans, grays and muted greens predominantly. Bright colored Wynsent can occur, but tend not to survive in the wild.

Abilities: Good sight and hearing, very alert. They are smart in their own way, mostly good at hiding and surviving and obtaining food. A samanayr could potentially use their clever little hands to help with grooming or harnesses. Their skin flaps allow them to glide short distances, but they are incapable of true flight. They must leap from heights in order to glide.

Reproduction: live young, one or two kits per breeding.

Anything else? They communicate with chirps, chitters and squeaks. They understand tone of voice and can be trained basic commands but complicated concepts are too much for them. They are strictly herbivorous, enjoying seeds nuts and fruit when they can get it.

If you win, the colours you'd like for your pair: rusty red and dark brown for the male, gray-green and cream for the female.

Species name: Scythe Claws

Size: About a foot tall on average and roughly twice as long. Some have reported sightings of a pygmy variant standing only six inches tall when fully grown.

Habitat: They are somewhat migratory, preferring to stay in warm climates. Young ones may venture into more chill areas, but generally will not stay long. They may be found in forests and plains, as well as warmer mountain ranges.

Physical description: They resemble tiny, mostly featherless dromaeosaurs; a bipedal stature, large hooked claws on the inner toes of the feet, and long nimble hands, however their muzzles tend to be short and blunt and the eyes somewhat overlarge, giving even adults a rather youthful appearance. They sport a feathery crest running from the top of their head down their backs. This may stop at the base of the neck halfway down the back, or at the base of the tail.

Typical coloration: They are usually found in earth tones in nature, though melanistic and albinos are relatively common. Females tend to have muted tones for their crests as well, but males have crests in all shades of the rainbow. When bred in captivity they often show a broader range of colors, and the females may begin to show brighter colors. The most common patterns are striping or spotting.

Abilities: They are extremely curious and eager for new ways to entertain themselves. If you can make it interesting for them they can be taught all manner of tricks. For those carnivorous species they make excellent hunting partners and are quick to accept their owner as a packmate. Attempts to teach them to build things have so far failed, though they have proved quite adapt at taking things apart. Because of their high curiosity they make a good warning of intruders as they will swarm over to investigate, making high pitched cheeping noises.

Reproduction: They lay small clutches of rather large eggs. Usually only one or two pairs in a pack will have nests at the same time, and the entire pack will take turns tending the eggs. Once they hatch they are purely the parents' responsibility.

Anything else? Diet varies depending on how many are in the pack. They tend to be highly social creatures, and a large pack may go after prey larger than themselves. Individuals will mostly hunt insects and small birds or mice. They have sometimes been spotted swimming out to catch fish, and appear to be adept at swimming. They do not appear to consider Sams to be prey.

If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: Rust, cream, and chocolate female; gold, black and cream male.

Species name: Slyther

Size: Varys. They grow longer as they age.

Habitat: warm places are preferred. they hate cold weather. they can be found in water, air, forest, ground and around volcanos.

Physical description: A snake like creature with wings. They dont EVER have legs or arms. Their wings vary in size and type depending on their home. They have been known to sport feathers, fins, bioluminesence, horns, pudgy, multiple eyes, fangs, smaller wings(multiples) and multiple heads on their long snake like bodies. ALL Slythers have hair that comes from behind their jaws (think behind your ear/ lower back of the cheek) that can vary in type (wavy, long, straight, curly, etc). Males have a distinguishing feature, they have a rattle at the end of their tails. Rattles have been known to be of different materials, results depend on where they live. long forked tongues help them to smell and hold things, exploring the world on a constant basis. they curl their bodies and wrap around things when sleeping or relaxing. some sams have been known to use slythers as living jewelry.

Typical coloration
: (natural, unnatural, either, any colour/pattern restrictions?) Their colors tend to blend in to their birth home, adapting at birth to mimic their surroundings. once they mimic for the first time they keep that pattern forever. patters are normally consisting of circles, spots, swirls and splotches.

Abilities: (telepathy? easy to train? good at guarding stuff?) patience and the ability to stay extremely still. they have the ability to squeeze into tight spaces and are very docile, preferring to flee rather than fight. they are extremely fast, if in shape ;).

Reproduction: (eggs, live young, cannot reproduce naturally) eggs. :)
Anything else? (optional)

If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: black, brown, and orange. other colors id love if needed (yellow, red and green)

Species name: Plague Pip – also very commonly known as Plague Eaters
Size: Can be as small as a field mouse to as big as a Samanayar
Habitat: Any habitat that they’re required to adapt to
Physical description: Pips MUST have at least two legs on them, with larger feet, and sharp teeth – other than that their trait possibilities are endless.
Typical coloration: Pips come in any array of colors possible, and the colors that they have are very key to what they do. Natural colors in Pips show that they have a particular affinity to their environment, and have an easier time sniffing out and destroying any sickness they find (and vice versa for non-naturally colored Pips), but that isn’t to say that they cannot help cure Samanayrs/their environment, they can simply do one quicker and more perfectly than the other.
Abilities: Pips all have the ability to breath underwater, but their main ability that gives them their name is that they eat diseases. Pips can sniff out and ‘attack’ sickness and disease in Samanayrs or in the environment and work it out of the Samanayr magically, while if the environment is sick, they can magic it out, or simply eat the affected vegetation. This ability of theirs makes them highly desirable by Healers especially. A song with a Pip will be especially advantageous and healthy in home and heart, which is why having a Pip is a sign of good fortune.
Reproduction: One live young a season, it is very much a two-parent job, and the young will often be kept in a den until the parents think it’s safe enough for their young to go out into the world. The males will father more than one Pip if the female’s stay together for joint raising of the young.
Anything else? Pip, in their name, refers to the sound that they make while they eat the sickness, and how they ‘pip’ changes from Pip to Pip.
Pips get very attached to their Samanayrs and do anything to keep them and their loved ones safe. The younger or older the Samanayr they are with/around the more attentive they are. They know that very young foals and old adults are more prone to sickness, and it’s not uncommon to find them swarming the young or old if they sense something is wrong, or could go wrong.
If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair:
I would love for the female to be a simple rocky grey color with blue eyes, and the male to be a red and orange with some extremity being white, with green eyes.

So exciting! I'm pretty in love with the idea of these little Pips <3

Species name: Aerials (Singular: Aery)

Size: about a foot long, in comparison to the two foot size of normal Samanayrs. Not very thick around, however.

Habitat: Frequently seen on coasts, plains, and mountains with plenty of air currents to use. Very adaptable- as long as they get nourishment. They dislike stagnant places however- they need air currents, and weather changes.

Physical description: Long and slender, these pets have shiny scales and little bony crests around their head and throat, and have delicate whisker-like tendrils from their face for judging air currents. They have only tiny front paws/talons, no hind legs. Some variations have tufts of feathers around their jaw/back of the cheek/skull, and at the tip of their tails. The most pure strains have a small gem on their foreheads. Other, more northern types may have bits of fur, thicker whiskers, or a jutting underbite- this is considered cute, but not desirable in Southern types.

Typical coloration: They typically are 2-5 colors, in vibrant colors, like sunrises or sunsets, and sometimes have small dotted or swirled patterns. They don't need to blend in as much due to their magic, so they also are not tied to one sort of terrain.

Abilities: Use magic to hold themselves aloft, as well as can grant objects smaller than them the ability to float briefly. There ability to communicate is limited to "picture-sharing"- they cannot speak telepathically with Samanayrs, but they can send hazy images to Samanayrs with free minds, to convey a message or an emotion.

Reproduction: They lay round eggs, that float in the air and are carried by the parents in their front claws. Hatchlings will tend to have issues floating- either they will float too high or too low, and mothers and fathers will guide them for their first few days of life.

Anything else?
Since they have only tiny teeth, Aerials like to eat things that are easy on their mouth- they have issues eating nuts or tough meat, so they prefer fruit, grains, sweet sap/honey, and some bugs. They will eat pretty much anything if offered in a paste/mashed form. They enjoy salty, sweet, and bitter tastes- however, very few Aerials like spicy food.

Due to their abilities Aerials are not confined to one setting or location, and so make the perfect pets for songs in obscure areas, as well as traveling Songs/Samanayrs. They get along great with Tribals, Healers, Traveling Mystics, Storytellers, and can provide use to a Scout. They enjoy being given work to do, as long as it doesn't involve too much heavy lifting. They are fond of games and riddles, even if they can only convey answers through images.

Aerials are not aggressive, unless provoked or their eggs are stolen from them. Foolish humans who have tried to steal eggs before have countered tales of missing finger tips and tiny scratches scarring their faces or hands.

(They are inspired by Quetzcoatls of Central America and Eastern Dragons. :3)

If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: Sunrise (soft pink, orange, gold, and pale purple.) and Twilight (Dark purple, indigo, faint hints of gray/pink)- gender of each doesn't matter either way. XD
Signature under construction!

Species name: Skedge
Size: Around half a foot tall and a foot long.
Habitat: Most commonly found in grasslands, though they can also be found in deserts, temperate forests, and rainforests, as long as they can dig a colonial burrow there for the molting or breeding seasons.
Physical description: The face, body, and legs of a hedgehog, though the claws are a bit thicker and more curved to aid in digging. Fan-like antennae, hard forewings, and transparent hindwings like a scarab beetle; belly and the top of the head and face also have hard plates, with males having variously-shaped horns coming off of the face plate. Hedgehog like spines only grow along their sides and slightly underneath the forewings when closed, leaving a spot of velvety soft skin on the upper back for the hingwings to rest in safely- and also an exceptionally nice place to pet them, if they're fond of you.
Typical coloration: Hedgehog-like parts are always in earthtones or neutral colors; beetle like parts are either shiny or metallic, and may come in any color or pattern. Wild and working skedges tend to have darker colors and fewer patterns, while toy skedges tend to be more extravagant, with breeders frequently focusing on bringing in new colors or patterns.
Abilities: Between their nose and antennae, skedges have an extremely keen sense of smell, and can be trained to find wild delicacies such as truffles, assist in search and rescues, or detect a number of different poisons in food or drink. They can also curl into a half-ball when threatened to try and protect their feet and stick their spines out further, though most think that they're simply trying to be to cute to eat when doing so, rather than actually increasing their natural defenses.
Reproduction: Live young, which are born with soft spines and no armor or wings- these will come in after about three months, after which time they may start leaving the burrow to explore. Tend to have a single baby a year, called a 'ked,' though twins are not infrequent, and triples are possibly but very unlikely.
Anything else? Their armor plating and wings need to be shed and regrown every year. Molting takes about a month, during which time they live completely underground and feast off of their stored food from that year in order to grow as large as possible before their armor comes in. They're very social with other skedges, and very unsocial with just about anything else, during this time, leading many owners to send their skedges to molting boarding schools for the month.
If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: Female in fawn, cream, pine green, and black; male in white, copper, gold, and sage green.

Thanks for the deadline extension, I had completely forgotten to put in my entry! Hope you're feeling better soon.

Species name: Wispit
Size: Usually about the size of a small rodent although they vary with the size of their surrounding wisp
Habitat: Usually dark damp areas like swamps or in caves
Physical description: Wispits are incorporeal will-o-wisp like creatures that somewhat resemble a gerbil with big round eyes, and long skinny tails with a little fluffy poof at the end. They are usually surrounded in what looks like a spherical glowing/smoky cloud with wispy tails that flow behind the Wispet. Some bits of the Wispet, especially around the ears and limbs almost look like they're fading into the rest of the wisp.
Typical coloration: Can be any colour, usually the surrounding wisp is a single colour; however, rarer Wispets may have two tones.
Abilities: Wispits usually float or hover and have the ability to phase in and out, allowing them to pass through solid objects and become invisible at times. They tend to be paler and less visible during the day. Depending on their emotions they can either give off light, or absorb light and darken an area.
Reproduction: The method with which Wispits reproduce has never fully been documented as they tend to phase out of this plane and the new baby Wispet phases back with the parents later.
Anything else? Wispets are sneaky and playful and they love to hide and startle unsuspecting Samanayrs and other creatures
If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: One black with orange and lighter orange wisp, the other a browny tan colour with a dark brownish black wisp

Species name: Qwabbas
Size: Shells usually range from 2" to 5" in diameter depending on the maturity of the qwabba.
Habitat: Populated areas, usually coastal regions.
Physical description: Qwabbas only recently developed into their own species, the result of crustacean mage constructs finding a popular foothold in seaside regions. Without a protective shell, they resemble nothing so much as disturbing spider-shrimp with chitinous legs and a vulnerable abdomen. You'll never find a living qwabba without its shell, however. The mages who constructed them originally enchanted brilliant, colorful shells in crowd-pleasing patterns to enlarge as they grew. The only bits of the qwabba normally visible besides the bright, eye-catching shells are the numerous legs and the stalk-like eyes, both of which vary in number depending on the creature. Six legs, one with a claw, and four eye-stalks? It happens.
Typical coloration: Qwabba colors range from dull red to slate blue, passing through the grayish-purple spectrum. The chitin itself is rarely bright. Their shells, however, can be any color or pattern under the sun.
Abilities: Despite their somewhat alien appearance, qwabbas can learn simple tricks and seem to enjoy the company of other living things, doubtless the product of their breeding. They can climb improbable objects and their claws are surprisingly strong, enabling them to lift objects several times their own weight.
Reproduction: Eggs, though few if any will actually hatch from a breeding due to the unstable magical nature of their design.
If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: Turquoise/burgundy shell for one and orange/purple/rust shell for the other in any pattern.

Species name: Bucca (plural Buccan)
Size: Males are roughly half the size of an average Samanayrs, females slightly smaller
Habitat: Desert and grasslands
Physical description: Long and streamlined with large oval ears, nostrils are forward placed and slit-like (Buccan can close then to keep out sand and other debris). Both genders have a pair of long, thin, backward-pointing twisted horns set behind their ears. broad cup-like hooves, hock-length tails. Grassland dwellers grow shaggy winter coats during colder months. Mature breeding males develop downward curving tusks from their upper jaws.
Typical coloration: (natural, unnatural, either, any colour/pattern restrictions?) Paler shades of browns and golds dominate in desert herds, but white is not uncomon. Grassland herds tend to be darker browns and reds. Some individuals are melanistic and their rarity is highly prized. Wild Buccan are solid colored with lighter ventral shading. Captive-breeding has produced white spotted individuals.
Abilities: (telepathy? easy to train? good at guarding stuff?) Originally domesticated as pack animals by Tribal and Desert Samanayrs. Some Songs breed their herds for speed and enjoy racing their animals.
Reproduction: (eggs, live young, cannot reproduce naturally) Live births, babies are birthed in the Spring..
Anything else? (optional) In the wild, Buccan live in territorial female-only herds, males are loners and travel widely. The fleece of grassland animals is prized by the Sharians and is a trade commodity. Samanayrs decorate the horns of their celebrated runners.
If you win, the colours you’d like for your pair: Male should be black or very dark brown with a lighter brown underbelly. Female should be dark red with a lighter underbelly and white patches.

Oh wow, I love seeing all the designs sketched out in sushi-style! Very fun XD

Good luck judging Sushi, I wouldn't want to make the call. They're all so fun and original!

Whew, this was a difficult one to judge! Between PI and the Sam forum there were 19 entries, all so unique and creative :D Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, it's always a pleasure to see what everyone comes up with!

In the end, I narrowed it down to three finalists and just couldn't decide, so I ended up going with all three of them! Presenting:

Vairs by Jaes! These weasel-like pets can be trained to learn simple tricks and tasks, and are particularly good at squeezing into tight spaces! Wild Vairs tend to have coloration that fits in with their environment, and domestic Vairs can have a variety of colors.

Skedges by Janalee! With features of both hedgehogs and beetles, Skedges feature bright colors on their shells and earth tones and neutral colors over the rest of their bodies. They have a keen sense of smell and can be trained in a wide variety of scent-related tasks.

Georopter by Bluestarwolf12! These creatures are very similar to bats in appearance but with larger eyes and stone deposits on their backs, which they get by mining the walls of the caves where they make their homes. Georopters are able to detect stones and minerals and, if trained young, can be trained to find a wide variety of them.

Congrats to the winners, and thank you to everyone for entering :D I'll be adding the participation modiems to everyone's inventories tomorrow!

Oh my gosh! I'm still having such a hard time believing that my little Georopters actually won and now exist! x3 Thank you so much, Sushi! <3

I'm loving the Skedges and the Vairs, too! So fluffy and colorful! Congrats Janalee and Jaes! 8D
